Before You Begin
開始之前
The year is 1920. Hong Kong is a British colony of 625,000 people. There are no MTR trains, no skyscrapers in Tsim Sha Tsui, no air conditioning. Most Chinese families live in cramped tenement flats — ten people sharing two rooms. Fresh water is carried in buckets. Electricity is a luxury only the wealthy can afford.
You are a member of the Chan family, living in Sai Ying Pun on Hong Kong Island. Your father works at the docks hauling cargo. Your mother takes in laundry from neighbours. There are eight children. You are the third.
Grandfather paid for your school fees, but Grandfather is dead. The money is gone. Today, your father will tell you that school is over.
What happens next is up to you.
How This Story Works
This is a choose-your-own-path story. At key moments, you will be given choices that change what happens next.
Your first choice: play as the third son or the third daughter. Each path is completely different.
There are 3 possible endings. None of them are wrong. They reflect the real range of outcomes for working-class families in 1920s Hong Kong.
Look for The Real History section at the bottom of each scene — it explains the true events behind the story.
You can replay from any branch point to discover different endings.
Every character in this story is fictional, but every event — the plague,
the strike, the typhoon — really happened.
